What Can I Do for the World Today? Words and Music © 2013 Kayte Deioma, BMI

Every morning I wake up and say
"What can I do for the world today?"
I can recycle 'stead of throwing stuff away.
That's one thing I can do for the world today.

CHORUS

Some people think there's nothing to do
to make the world better and better.
But I know that I can make a difference,
even if I'm just picking up litter.

Every morning I wake up and say
"How can I help my mom today?"
I can put all my toys away.
That's one way to help my mom today.

Every morning I wake up and say
"How can I make a new friend today?"
I can invite someone lonely to play.
That's one way to make a new friend today.

Every morning I wake up and say
"How can I make someone smile today?"
I can give a big hug away.
That's one way to make someone smile today.

Every morning I wake up and say
"What can I do for the world today?"
Every morning I wake up and say
"What can I do for the world today?"

Notes on What Can I Do for the World Today?

This song was inspired by an interview I watched with Gregg Braden. He ended the interview with the statement "Every morning I wake up and say, what can I do for the world today." That instantly sparked the music flowing.

The premise, of course, is to instill in every child (and adult), the belief that our actions matter, and the smallest contribution makes a difference in the world. Too many people give in to the overwhelming sense that the world's problems are too big for little old me to have any impact. This song can be used to start brainstorming what other things kids can do to make a difference in their home, school, community, and the world, and to set up an action plan to report back on what changed. Did you make someone smile with a hug? Did you make a more beautiful space by helping to clean it up?
